After two years of limited public access, the St Edmunds Peninsula Museum is preparing to open for visitors this coming season. While we are still in the process of developing guidelines to manage ongoing covid concerns, by the time we open on the May holiday weekend we will be ready to welcome visitors. Our plan is to operate on weekends only starting May 21 to the end of June, seven days a week in July and August and then on weekends for the balance of the season.

This summer, we plan to invite our local artisans and crafters to come for demonstration days. In previous years we have been supported on a regular basis by our local weavers, spinners and wood carvers. We would like to expand on these events and invite any person or group to come to demonstrate your art or craft.

The museum has been awarded two grants this year. We have received a grant from the Canadian Heritage Foundation that will allow us to improve our document management and digital records. This is extremely important for us in preserving our history. We have also received a Trillium grant for the relocation of a heritage log cabin. The cabin is currently located on Parks Canada property and is believed to be the oldest structure in the former St Edmunds Township. It will be an excellent complement to Jacob’s Cabin and will provide us with another perspective of early lifestyles in our community. The Municipality, the Museum Committee and Parks Canada will be working in partnership on this project.

We are seeking volunteers who would like to give their time to our community museum. Volunteering can take a number of different forms – if you like greeting our visitors, sharing the stories of our history and our exhibits and are available for shifts of 2 to 5 hours, this is the role for you; if you have experience in data management, genealogy/ancestry… and prefer to work in the background, we have opportunities; if your skill set and interests are in doing odd jobs, carpentry, painting, yard work… we have chores and projects that need to be done. Hours are negotiable and we can work around your availability.

The Museum is a primary link to our proud history. If you are interested in becoming involved, please contact Rob Davis at 519-596-8766 or Ruth Bainbridge at 519-596-2129.
