SEPO executives forwarded a letter to council, and the Press, regarding a waste management discussion at council that I feel requires some context.
The Climate Action committee presented to council on December 20/21. Reducing waste generation is a component of their plan. During the discussion, I suggested the inclusion of their materials in the information package we are asking STA owners to place in each rental. It is meant to inform and assist visitors in a number of areas. Having bins and information on recycling could help with our goal of reducing waste.
The municipality obviously has numerous discussions on the waste management. While the St Edmunds landfill likely has a lifespan in the single digits, the matter has not been ignored. Thanks to the foresight of MNBP staff, previous councils and a very competent Waste Management Committee, approvals for expansion of capacity at Eastnor puts us in good position.
In regard to the St. Edmunds facility, I asked staff what impact this would have on ratepayers. Since the landfill would not be totally closed up, operational impact would not be that great. It would become a transfer station. The majority of household garbage is picked up at any rate.
That being said, we need everyone…businesses, home and cottage owners, visitors, to be aware and insist on ways they can help. The three R’s is still the best motto. I was simply suggesting another way that we can get the message out for the end result we all want… less garbage!
