Tobermory Food Bank Benefits From Generosity Of Community And Beyond

The month of December started on a very positive note as OPP Auxiliary Officers were outside of Peacock’s Foodland on December 4th for the “Stuff the Cruiser” event that collected 600 lb of groceries for the Tobermory Food Bank. This Event is organized every year by Tom Buckley and helps replenish our shelves as winter approaches with the increased need that brings.

On December 11th, at the Santa Claus Parade, once again, we were able to offer Hot Dogs by donation to parade participants and those attending.

Throughout the month of December many donations came in from individuals, organizations and Churches. It has been noted before that Bruce Power and the Bruce Power Worker’s Union have been supporters of the Food Bank. The Union gave their second large donation of the year of $2000 and Bruce Power gave $2000 of Foodland Grocery cards.

Also, Dominik Franken created a “Music on the Bruce Peninsula” CD as a fundraiser with the proceeds divided among Tobermory Food Bank, the Lion’s Head Food Bank, the Hospital Auxiliary, and Women’s Shelter-Grey Bruce.

But as always, the local community supports the work of the Tobermory Food Bank in a very generous way with so many individual donations coming directly, or as donation at Peacock’s or by e-transfers. The ongoing support of the local community is what keeps the Tobermory Food Bank going all year around. We anticipate with the rise in the cost of living that Food Security will be an issue for many individuals and families.

This past Christmas we gave out 30 Hampers that helped individuals and families have a Christmas meal and extra for the holiday. Included in the Hampers this year were some special treats donated by the Sweet Shop. That extra was very much appreciated by the recipients. We were pleased once again to distribute the toys and gifts collected by the Firefighters Association that gave children a brighter Christmas. The Firefighters Association put great effort and thought into making sure each toy and gift is special for each child.

We begin the year with four new volunteers. We appreciate that they have come forward to join our team. If you are interested in volunteering at the Tobermory Food Bank there are many ways of volunteering. If you have any questions about volunteering or have any other questions about the Tobermory Food Bank, please call Linda at 519-596-2333 or Jim at 519-375-7010. Keep taking care.
