Principal Pickett Retiring

Bruce Peninsula District School (BPDS) and St. Edmunds Public School (SED) will be a little different this fall, as some administration changes have occurred.

The beloved, enthusiastic Principal, Matthew Pickett, will be retiring. Previous Vice Principal, Ms. Brenda Brewer will be filling the position of Principal at BPDS and SED this fall. Joining her, Ms. Breanna Heels (who some may remember as Breanna Myles) will be taking over as Vice Principal.

“I have been a very proud Panther and SED Fox for many years,” Pickett says reminiscing. “Our Peninsula schools are special places and remain a vital part of the health of our communities.”

BPDS/SED Principal Matthew Pickett will be retiring with current VP Brenda Brewer stepping into the lead role. Breanna Heels will return to BPDS/SED as VP. BPP File Photo.

Everyone can agree that it’s going to be weird not having Matt and his cheerful personality around at the school anymore. “We’re obviously going to miss Matt Pickett and his incredible enthusiasm for helping students get the most out of their school experiences. I don’t think I’m going to be able to fill his shoes at the elementary cross-country days, or on the volleyball court, but I know we have great teachers who are ready to step up and help out,” Brewer states.

Pickett has no doubts that Brenda and Breanna will take good care of these schools. “I look forward to seeing the great work continue under Ms. Heels and Principal Brewer. They are both super people who will continue the great work with our outstanding, second to none staff,” Pickett says.

Ms. Brewer has worked at BPDS for 7 years in total as Vice Principal. “I’m incredibly excited to be taking over as Principal of both schools on the Peninsula. I’ve loved working in these communities over the years and am really looking forward to continuing that work.” Brewer says.

Ms. Heels is a graduate from BPDS and started her teaching career there. She previously worked at BPDS for 4 years teaching grade 7/8. “It is an honour and a privilege to return to BPDS and St. Edmunds as a VP.” Heels says. “I bring both classroom teaching experience and system leadership experience to this role, but more than anything, I bring a love for the school and the community.”

Breanna is thrilled to be back at BPDS, in her hometown. “BPDS has always been home. Having been a student and teacher at BPDS, I can understand both of these perspectives. I grew up in Lion’s Head and live in the community with my family, so I also understand parents’ perspectives. I am deeply invested in the school and the community because this is where I choose to be and raise my own family.”

The last school year and a half have been tough on students and teachers in the school system and teachers understand that. “In September we’re hoping to work on re-establishing routines and making sure students are happy to be back at school.” Brenda explains. “Teachers are accustomed to students with different strengths and learning histories and are well-equipped to help everyone in their classes find academic success. I’m looking forward to supporting staff as they support students.”

“To the students reading this, next year will be better. You have shown resilience and perseverance this year, and we see you for everything you have learned this year, not for what you haven’t.” Breanna assures students. “Learning loss is a hot topic right now among educators, but I think students have also gained a lot that perhaps isn’t in the curriculum. We will meet students where they are as we always have, and build back better.” Heels confirms.

It’s certain that BPDS and St. Edmunds remain in good hands. And it is with great hope that school will return to in-person learning in the fall.
