Anyone who thinks Gardening begins in the spring and ends in the fall is missing out on the best part of the year. For “Gardening begins in January with The Dream”. ~Josephine Neuse
I’m not a huge fan of winter, however there are no weeds to dig out, no mosquitos to swat, no slugs to hate and no rabbits to chase.
Winter is a time to reflect, to go over my gardening journal and to make plans for the 2020 garden. What worked? What didn’t? And where on earth am I going to put all the new Hostas I ordered? Let alone the lilies! Now is the time I will write my first of many to do lists.
I’m loving Lilies with Hostas in my many, many containers, and they seem to really like each other as close neighbours. There seems to be a busy Bunny or two by the look of the tracks out back. However, right on top of those tracks are Coyotes. Maybe Mother Nature will solve that problem. Just as long as Canoe doesn’t scare them away; he sure kicks up a fuss when he goes out some nights. If I were Wile E. Coyote I sure wouldn’t come anywhere near that place with that big scary boy around.
I do have to admit though, I love to look out back at the gardens covered with snow and the paths that are almost hidden. With the sun Mother Nature has provided it is sparkling and so, so pretty. But it’s COLD.
So for now I will settle down in my cozy little back room in our cozy little house, coffee in hand, and debate whether I will vacuum or not. Answering myself by picking up one of my favorite gardening books, putting my feet up and taking a sip.
Happy February Gardening,
Joni
