The July 2019 Men’s Breakfast had a good turnout with a number of new faces – will it be you attending for the first time (or coming back after a sojourn away) in August?
Our feature speaker was Peter Rasberry, Tobermory resident and long-time nature educator at the Blair Outdoor Education Centre in Kitchener. Peter began with a quote from Ritu Ghatouray: “Every child is born a naturalist. His eyes are, by nature, open to the glories of the stars, the beauty of the flowers, and the mystery of life.” He then touched on the James Lovelock (then a NASA scientist) concept of the Gaii hypothesis which proposes that living organisms interact with their inorganic surroundings on Earth to form a synergistic and self-regulating, complex system that helps to maintain and perpetuate the conditions for life on the planet. Now in his 100th year, Dr. Lovelock continues writing and sharing his incredible intellect with us today.
Peter went on to illustrate the makeup of the Saugeen-Bruce Peninsula Gaii place with beautiful photographs of common species (Barred Owl, Common Terns mating, caterpillars metamorphosing into moths, early over-wintering butterflies like Milbert’s Tortoiseshell, and small predatory crab spiders, and water fleas that perpetuate life by cloning themselves. We share life everyday life with these other animals that are all around us, but that many of us do not see: in his life’s work, Peter’s main focus has been to instill a strong sense of wonder into his students, and create a yearning for deeper learning about nature. He did that in spades to the Men’s Breakfast crowd.

Note that our next meeting is Saturday August 17. Breakfast is served at 9am, with coffee ready by 8am. The guest speaker is Cathy Addison, Deputy Clerk for Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula, speaking on the latest enhancements to our Emergency Services Plan.
