The United Way of Bruce Grey is encouraging parents and caregivers to make a donation to their Backpack Program instead of buying “another mug” for their children’s teacher, EA or ECE.
“We hear from teachers how important the Backpack Program is to their classrooms, and what better way to thank them for all their support throughout the school year, than making a donation to the Backpack Program in their honour” suggests United Way executive director Francesca Dobbyn
People can participate by donating $20 to sponsor each fully stocked backpack in honour of their special educator. The United Way’s wholesale purchasing power keeps the actual cost of the backpacks to around $20 yet the value of the backpacks ranges from $35 to $110.
To make a secure online donation, simply visit Canada Helps at https://tinyurl.com/yxb7d226, give the United Way a call at 519-376-1560 or stop by their office at 380 9th Street East in Owen Sound.
The United Way will send your educator an e-mail (if provided) to let them know that a donation has been made in their honour or the certificate can be sent to the donor by e-mail to print off and share with the educator.
Don’t have a printer? If you come into the United Way office, they are happy to supply the certificate.
Since 2005, the Backpack Program has been reducing classroom bullying because each child starts school with the proper supplies, just like their classmates. To date, the United Way has distributed over 23,000 backpacks across Bruce and Grey Counties to low income children. These children are able to go to school stress free and with smiles on their faces, thanks to people like you.
