Tobermory Food Bank To Mark World Hunger Day with BBQ Fundraiser

The Tobermory Food Bank shares many stories of generous donors. One of our local regular donors shared a wonderful example she recently experienced of “paying it forward”. She was in south western Ontario on a visit, and was shopping for food bank items to donate to our Tobermory Food Bank and using her reward points to pay for the items. The cashier was so taken with her using her points to pay, that she shared it with others waiting in line behind our donor. The next person in line sent her husband to collect items that she would pay with her points and donate to their local food bank. It did not stop there, the next person behind her did the same thing. Even though we may hear stories that are not quite so uplifting, we are so fortunate to live in an amazing caring country, and indeed local community.
Over the Easter Holiday period we received many donations including the pre-packaged bags that Peacock staff put together for people to purchase and donate right at the store. We packed 22 Hampers for distribution this past Easter.
It is May, and that means we mark World Hunger Day by providing an opportunity to purchase, by donation, a hot dog and a beverage for lunch on Thursday May 23rd. We set up outside of Peacock’s between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Businesses can pre-order for their staff and lunch will be delivered by one of our Food Bank Volunteers. We greatly appreciate the donations we receive from this endeavour, but we also do this to bring attention to the food security challenges faced not only world-wide, but in our own Country and community. In Canada 1 in 8 Canadians experience Food Security issues and in Grey Bruce 1 in 5 children live in low-income families.
If you are wondering what items may be suitable to donate, peanut butter, jam and breakfast/snack bars are very welcome. Also, donated household items such as toilet tissue, paper towel and Kleenex assist our clients with their limited budgets to purchase grocery items.
If you have any questions about the Tobermory Food Bank operation, or wish to volunteer, please call Linda at 519-596-2333. Our regular hours are Tuesdays 1-3 p.m. at the Meeting Place. If there is an emergency need for food outside that time, please call Linda at the above number or Jim at 519-375-7010.
