Renee Holmes RDH and Emma McGregor CDA II from the dental department at the Grey Bruce Health Unit will be holding a Preventive Dental Clinic for children and youth 0-17 years of age on May 2 and 3rd at the Tobermory Meeting Place.
The Preventive Dental Clinic is available to families who may be experiencing a financial hardship when paying for their children’s dental visits.
They have been operating a mobile preventive dental clinic located at the Salvation Army Family Services Building in Wiarton since 2011. Portable dental equipment including a dental chair, dental light and compressor complete with dental hand pieces allows for an open space to be transformed into a functional dental clinic space.
Preventive clinic appointments to help improve dental health which may include:
-Cleaning of teeth-scaling and polishing
-Brushing and flossing instruction
-First visit to a dental professional for infants turning 1 year of age.
-Dental health support and education.
Healthy Smiles Ontario
Healthy Smiles Ontario is a government-funded dental program that provides free preventive, routine, and emergency dental services for children and youth 17 years old and under. The program includes regular visits to a licensed dental provider and covers the costs of treatment including:
-cleaning -tooth extraction
-fillings (for a cavity) -x-rays
-urgent or emergency dental care (including treatment of a child’s toothache or tooth pain)
First Visit by First Birthday
We are also offering for parents to bring children in to the clinic for the first dental visit if they have not yet seen a dental provider. We encourage a first dental check up by one year of age. Because early childhood tooth decay can begin as soon as teeth erupt, assessing oral health is important to do as soon as infants have teeth. During the first visit you can expect a quick check up of the teeth, as well as important information about caring for primary teeth, teething, diet etc.
If parents have questions about the clinic or the Healthy Smiles Ontario program in general, or to book into the clinic, they are encouraged to contact the Grey Bruce Health Unit directly at 519-376-9420 (extension 8 for the dental department).
