Kristine Hammell, Thorsten Arnold and family welcomed Bruce Peninsula Environment Group’s (BPEG) members to the Persephone Market Garden 100 acre property near Allenford, ON on 17 June 2026.

Kristine and Thorsten are strong advocates for ecological agriculture, conservation and biodiversity. They have been operating their market garden for 17 years, employing various practices to minimize negative environmental impacts, promote soil health and biodiversity.

They showed BPEG members the various techniques used to manage soil health such as no till, mulch and cover crops. They discussed their challenges and successes over the years, and their best practices. The evening proved to be very educational and thought provoking as to the role and responsibility of small scale agriculture in providing healthy and quality produce to local communities.

The farm is operated as a Community Supported Agriculture venture (CSA), with a pickup location at Sylvia Street in Lion’s Head. The farm also produces seeds for sale to seed companies.
