Letter: Fireworks in The Bruce

1447

Surely the time is long past when something must be done about fireworks and their irresponsible use in Tobermory. There seems to be an acquiescence that this noise is simply an expected irritant. The booming of various fireworks often accompanied by the hollering and cheering of various groups, starts before dark and lasts long after 10 p.m. While I understand there is a noise enforcement officer, it is apparent that many people who do complain have had little or no success in having the officer appear.

While uncontrolled fireworks shows complete disrespect to residents as well as those visitors who come to enjoy the peace, quiet and beauty of The Bruce, it is also wholly unacceptable in our UNESC0 designated area. Wildlife cycles are disturbed and surely this should be a major consideration for all who love and appreciate nature.

We live here. We pay taxes here. Like all individuals and families, we need to have some restful, uninterrupted sleep without being terrorized by a bombardment of noise, even before and after July 1st supposed celebrations.

We believe that for the reasons above and others which we have not included, such as the fire hazard of uncontrolled use of fireworks, there must be attention paid immediately to this issue. We would welcome the total banning of fireworks display and sales in The Bruce.

Respectfully,

Glenda Burrell and Simon White
