Letter: Protecting the Great Lakes Starts With Us

34

My name is Ruthie Mae, and I am a Grade 8 student at Bruce Peninsula District School.

I was given a project in Geography to do something in the community to bring awareness to an issue that breaks my heart and I chose invasive species within the Great Lakes.

I am writing this to express my concerns about invasive species in our local lakes, such as the Round Goby and Zebra Mussels. There are multiple invasive species living in our waters that are spreading quickly and harming native species, and I can’t help but worry.

I am asking that the Municipality of North Bruce work towards putting up informational posters, addressing the issues of invasive species and making people more aware. The posters should inform people on how they can help; like, for example, “Cleaning your boats more frequently is one of the many ways you can help stop the spread of invasive species”. I believe that if they do this, it will bring more attention to the subject of invasive species and people will think more about how they can help.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
