Letter: Vandalism to Sign on Dorcas Bay Road

We are writing to report vandalism to signage at the junction of Dorcas Bay Road and Borden Drive.

We have owned a seasonal cottage on Borden Drive since 2010. In 2013, we added a sign with our surname to the signage frame at the junction that lists property owners on Borden. Our sign was placed at the top left of the frame.

On a trip to our cottage in May of this year we noticed our sign was missing from the frame. Our son, who lives on Dorcas Bay, found our sign in the bush about 6 or 7 meters behind the frame. He returned the sign to the frame in the original top left position. At the time we assumed we had been the victims of a random act of petty vandalism.

Unfortunately, when we arrived for a cottage stay on July 19, we noticed our sign was again missing. On July 20, we found the sign, once again 6 or 7 meters in the bush behind the signage frame. We replaced the sign in a different, hopefully more secure, location on the right side of the frame.

The repetition of the vandalism to our sign suggests the acts were not random but were directed specifically at us. We find this possibility very disturbing and are concerned that the vandalism may escalate and be directed at our cottage.

We have no evidence as to who may be responsible for the vandalism, nor do we know if there have been similar vandalism at any of the several other signage frames on Dorcas Bay Road. We thought it prudent to bring the vandalism to the attention of the municipality, Crime Stoppers and the local press.

Sincerely,

Patrick and Mary O’Rourke
