What’s Happening at SOK?
Submitted by Moira Parker, Sources of Knowledge
The Sources of Knowledge Forum returns May 2–4, 2025, with the theme “FIRE – Respect, Knowledge, Balance.” Held at the Parks Canada Visitor Centre in Tobermory, this event will explore fire’s deep cultural, ecological, and historical significance.
Friday evening kicks off with the kindling of a fire by Johnny Keeshig, Saugeen Ojibway Nation elder and fire-keeper, sharing Ojibwa teachings on fire’s sacredness. April Jones, an Indigenous elder and teacher, will follow with insights on the balance between fire and water. The night’s keynote speaker, Dr. Michael Chazan, anthropologist and archaeologist, will delve into humanity’s evolving relationship with fire, from ancient hearths to modern wildfire challenges. Additionally, the Peninsula Bruce Trail Club is considering offering a Friday afternoon hike to view a recent prescribed burn. The Forum continues through the weekend with expert panels featuring wildfire specialists, emergency planners, Parks Canada ecologists, and forest regeneration experts.
In the lead-up to the Forum, SOK is also hosting a Housing Talk on March 28, 1:30–3:30 PM, in partnership with The Meeting Place Tobermory. This session will explore housing affordability, infrastructure, and funding solutions in Northern Bruce Peninsula.
