Stopped in Awe: News from Tobermory United
Submitted by Rev. Sheryl Spencer
Some sort of miracle happened for the Tobermory United Church Bazaar on November 30th. The weather forecast for that day was terrible – snow and high winds all day long. We considered postponing the bazaar, but for one thing, the Tobermory Community Centre was booked for the rest of the month, and for another, we had mounds of fresh food prepared that would not keep well. The committee had an impromptu meeting the day before, and there was unanimous and enthusiastic agreement to go ahead.
The first miracle was that Saturday dawned clear and sunny. Not a speck of snow! The second miracle was that people came out! It was humbling to watch folks arrive in the numbers that they did. The support of our event was palpable. Thank you, therefore, to everyone involved with the bazaar – a courageous and committed leadership committee; the many volunteers who stepped in; all the vendors who sold their wares, including Northern Twisted Roots; St Nicholas, who paid a visit; and especially a wonderful community that truly showed up. (see recap of event on pages B1 and B2)
In other news, all are welcome to the Longest Night service at Tobermory United on December 20, at 7:00 p.m. This is a quiet and contemplative service that is meant as a time to pause in a season that can be overly busy. It is also meant to bring comfort to those who are grieving or weary – and aren’t we all in some way or another?
Our Christmas Eve service will take place at 5:00 p.m. on December 24. This will be a family-friendly service filled with music and light.
Blessings to all for hope, peace, joy and love through this season.
