Letter: What The Majority Can Impose On The Minority

454

Various letters have been written on the topic of fireworks, including one in support by Joseph Jones.  Mr Jones’ concluding sentence is “The majority rules in democracy.”  Before the end Mr Jones states that the majority of NBP residents enjoy watching fireworks.

I wonder how Mr Jones is so sure of what the majority enjoys or does not enjoy? I wonder if he is transferring his tastes to others? I am sure there are no data to back him up.

Regarding democracy and what the majority can impose on the minority, a lot of caution is needed.  If Municipal Council approved a quarry complete with rock crushing, dust, noise, bright lights and heavy truck traffic adjacent to his property, he would change his views about the powers of the majority.  After all, Municipal Council represent the will of the majority.  Should they not have the right to approve the quarry?  Mercifully, they do not.  The powers of the majority are circumscribed.
