Your local Rotary Club thanks everyone who came out to help celebrate our 70th Anniversary as a Club on April 13th at Rotary Hall! It was a fantastic turnout with plenty of conversation and cheer as past and present Rotarians gathered to mark this momentous occasion. We especially thank the ladies of SWANS who prepared and served a delicious dinner that evening!

For more information regarding our Anniversary celebration event, see article on page 20.

Rotarians and Friends of Rotary Volunteer Awards

Five Rotarians and two Friends of Rotary were nominated and received awards for volunteer dedication and commitment to our community of Northern Bruce Peninsula at the 2024 Volunteer Recognition Day held on Wednesday, April 17th at Rotary Hall and hosted by the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula.

Award recipients this year included Rotarians Douglas Greig, Wendell Thomson, Dan Bryans and Rob Hiscott, and a posthumous award to Bob ‘Bonzaii’ Spearing (received by Rotarian Captain Jerry Greig on behalf of Denise Spearing, Bob’s daughter). Friends of Rotary Dale Diebel and Dr. Dave Thomson also received volunteer awards for their support at Rotary community Pancake Breakfasts over many years.

Trivia Night in May at Rotary Hall

Another fun Trivia Night was held at Rotary Hall on Friday, April 26, hosted by Caeli Mazara and Eric Perez. The next scheduled Trivia Night will be held on Friday May 24 from 7:30 to 9:30 PM at Rotary Hall, with doors opening at 7:00 PM. There will be a $5.00 entry free, and those participating can organize their own teams or join an existing team, with typically four to six people per team. Test your trivia knowledge and have some fun – hope to see you there!

Celebration of Life for Bob ‘Bonzaii’ Spearing

Rotary is hosting a Celebration of Life for long-time Rotarian Bob ‘Bonzaii’ Spearing who passed away recently. The event will be held Saturday, May 11 at Rotary Hall in Lion’s Head between 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM with Rotarians tending bar at the Hall. A light luncheon will be served. All present and former Rotarians, friends of Rotary and friends and neighbours of Bob and Dee are invited to join us to celebrate our dear friend.

Bob was a very active Rotarian involved in most Club activities, especially with coordinating our Food and Beverages services (including the very popular Rotary Pancake Breakfasts for the community), serving as our Bar Manager, along with serving on Scholarships and other Club committees. Bob was a Rotarian who truly exemplified the Rotary motto of ‘Service Above Self’ at all times.

In memory of our dear friend, the ‘Service Above Self’ Scholarship, awarded annually to a student who excels in volunteer and extra-curricular activities, has been re-named the ‘Bob Spearing Service Above Self Scholarship’ which will be reflected in the upcoming BPDS graduation event at the end of June 2024.
