The Peninsula Family Health Team (PFHT) welcomed two medical students from the University of Toronto last month as part of the Rural Ontario Medicine program.

ROMP Week is a one-week elective experience organized in conjunction with rural communities in Ontario. The week provides an opportunity for medical students to get a snapshot early in their training of what it is like to live and practice medicine in a community outside of a large urban centre.

Now in our tenth consecutive year of participation, the Peninsula Family Health Team is a strong advocate for the Rural Ontario Medicine Program. This year, Graham Colby of Conestogo and Ovini Thomas of Ottawa spent their week job shadowing at the PFHT clinics in Lion’s Head and Tobermory, the Tobermory Hyperbaric Facility and the Emergency department at the Lion’s Head hospital.

Retired Physician Dr. Dave Thomson (center) provided a suturing training clinic for our visiting medical students to hone their skills.

Graham and Ovini were able to observe the interaction between patients, nurses, staff and physicians and gain a greater appreciation of the scope of family medicine in a rural setting. In their off-hours, they were able to explore our region and learn more about our communities and why we love to live and work here.

HUGE thanks to the following local businesses for their support of ROMP Week 2023: Bear Tracks Restaurant, Ben-net Kids, Bruce Anchor Cruises, Georgian Bay Soapworks, The Hungry Hiker, The Lion’s Head Beach Motel, The Lion’s Head Inn, Mom’s Pizza, The Princess Hotel, Rachel’s Restaurant, The Shops at 84 Main, The Sweet Shop and Tacomory.

The PFHT also wishes to extend our thanks to the MNBP Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee for their support and assistance in making this a memorable week for our visiting medical students.
