Tobermory resident Bunkey Cunliffe completes her 6-year cross Canada bike ride on September 10th in St John’s, Newfoundland.
Submitted by Geoff Cunliffe

On Saturday, September 10th Bunkey Cunliffe finished her Cross Canada Bike Ride in St John’s, Newfoundland after peddling 903km across Newfoundland since September 1st, and a total of 6,954km from Vancouver over the last 6 years. She couldn’t take her bike all the way to the water in St John’s so she anointed her front wheel on Water Street with a bit of the North Atlantic out of a Tim Horton’s cup. After all that way she still had enough energy left to lift her bike over her head in the traditional way following a major cycling event.

She worked on the project every September. The first year she tried to start from Vancouver but was stymied by forest fires in BC so started at the Alberta border and cycled across all three Prairie Provinces; Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The 2nd year there were forest fires in BC again, so she cycled all across northern Ontario. The 3rd year she finally did BC, followed by the 4th across Quebec and last year New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. She was helped in her endeavour by husband Geoff who drove the support vehicle and acted as bicycle maintenance man, chief cook and bottle washer.
