I propose an innovative housing option for consideration: a ‘pod’ of connected yet autonomous covid/soundproof smaller residences (under 1000 square feet) to be shared by seniors with the option of a residential unit attached for a Personal Support Worker to service this pod (of 5 or perhaps 7 to 10?) units plus as needed.
The ‘pod’ could be a continuous hexagonal design for energy efficiency, ground floor barrier-free access (especially for visually/other challenged), with shared laundry room that might also function as an activity/meeting/workshop area, shared internet, also with a central courtyard for a vegetable/flower garden, recreation etc. and covered parking as needed for vehicles (shared vehicles – I have a 2019 Chevy Bolt EV I would share! Needs an EV charger.) and bicycles – so we need not have to scrape off snow/ice.
Shared maintenance, likely a hired person, re: snow clearing on ground and roof, adding softener salt to the system & changing water filters, window cleaning, air handling/heating filter cleaning/changing, plumbing or electrical repairs as needed.
This new for Tobermory ‘intentional community’ pod/compound would be a non-traditional living arrangement with distinct units for privacy but a communal support system for social wellbeing/sharing. As a Baby Boomer, there is likely a good deal of demand for those of us downsizing and wishing to diminish the loneliness of living separate.
Here’s hoping!
Arlene Kennedy,
Tobermory
