Letter: Naturalists Certainly Get Around

854

Like anyone else, I certainly love all the species that populate the peninsula. That is, the plants, insects, etc. I photograph them on our properties on the Peninsula, zoom in and appreciate all the tiny details. The camera my husband bought me for a birthday was by far one of the best gifts I have received. It is the gift that keeps on giving.

However, in researching the various species I realized there are many who are pinning species and posting their findings on internet sites. I appreciate their enthusiasm, but since I have found 3 at least that have been pinned on our property (like an “eyed brown”), in some cases these people are on property they do not own. Our property for example is posted no trespassing and gated. It’s not wise to post because you have the date, your name, species and some locations are mapped. You may as well hold a flag up saying “I trespassed”.

I appreciate your interests but please respect private property, signs and gates. I encourage people to google “moths inaturalist Ontario” for example and zoom in on the map and see for yourself. Or other species in searches. It was eye-opening.

Our property also is in an area designated as an ANSI where the Bruce County Official Plan requires that people need the permission of the landowner, although the trespass to property act should suffice.
