In The Garden: Hints From A Mrs Gardener Older Gardens, Newer Gardens Container Gardens

A few years ago I got the idea “I want a couple of giant Hostas”. So Sum & Substance, T Rex, and Empress Wu came home with me. Actually two S&S so they were planted side by side in a sunnier spot. The Empress & Mr T went in gardens just a few feet away from each other. Well, long story short they hated it here – hated it with a passion. S&S not too much, but the other two didn’t even attempt to grow – just sat there all pouty.

So after noticing one of the S&S getting pouty as well I decided to pot her up, after all I have had great success with other smaller Hostas in pots. Well she took off almost immediately; so glad I potted her up in a tree size pot. She is now thumbing her nose at her sister. So last year The Empress got potted up – put her in a big pot as well. She immediately showed improvement and this year she is strutting her stuff. It’s like the garden gremlins snuck in one night and switched her – she is huge. So for sure T Rex is the next to go, already have a pot for him.

The garden that Wu was in is almost all containers now. Nothing was happy there except a Hellebore. It’s a smaller garden, and two others nearby have plants that are not happy at all either… all on the North side. Just maybe the stories that were told to us about this being a dump site many, many years ago are true (we did find so many bottles, cans & pots over there when we were clearing the property – that’s where our “Pot tree by Pete” is from – so many pots & bottles found there).

The garden where T Rex lives for now is a longer one and in the middle nothing seems too happy except a Hellebore??? I have thought of digging them all up and putting a path through it, however giving my head a good shake and looking in the mirror made the decision that containers would be lovely there. The plants in there are not very large so out comes my handy garden knife and problem solved. Three Orange Lilies there as well doing nothing, so that should tell me something. Garden Fix #213 on its way.

Summer is here. Hopefully my water issue will be fixed soon and I will be having my morning strolls “In The Garden”.

Happy Gardening, Be Safe,

Joni
