In The Garden: Hints From a Mrs Gardener The Garden Is Waking Up

Our garden must have taken pity on me; she woke up and took off in high gear. The garden is quite shady so usually slow to make a appearance, however this year she seems to be in passing gear. The shady bunch are up and showing off already and I love it. So out comes my fan rake and tippy toed I go to just fluff up a bit, then let her go to do her thing.

The plants in containers are all showing off already, especially the ones potted up last year. I dug out one whole garden – nothing was happy in it – except the Hellebores, they stayed. Once it fills in it will look great. The soil at that side of the yard is awful and I give up trying to amend it. But the containers are happy campers, so be it.

Astilbe is one plant that I have admired in other gardens but absolutely no luck whatsoever over here. Most got potted up last year and they are all looking wonderful; full and tripled their size. Found two more eeny teeny ones, I’ll dig them up and pot them as well. Those gardens are quickly becoming my “Pot Gardens”. So some pretty rocks and pots of shade lovers and they’re home to stay. Easy peasy.

Picked up my Red Dragon Wing Begonias last week and planted some of my xtra large pots with them. They are on our front patio and love that look – shady off and on during the day so the red is popping out. Took out the Hostas and Ferns that were there, loving the Red.

Son Scot brought up a gorgeous hanging basket for the back garden. It will hang from the wonky old Poplar tree adding lots of colour there. Still waiting on a few pots to wake up (I hope) and it will be time to sit back and relax. NOT.

I must say just walking away from the garden in the fall sure is a lot easier. The spring seemed to take 1/2 the time to clean it up… and I do want easy more and more every year.

Hoses are all out and tools in their summer spots and I’m ready to go. BTW I’m forbidden to go in one of the gardens with all the tripping hazards (rocks) and I will behave. Promise.

Happy Spring, Keep Safe, Happy Gardening,

Joni
