Second semester is off and running at Bruce Peninsula District School (BPDS). It is hard to believe March break is already here! Here is a recap of what the Secondary Students have been up to at BPDS since the start of second semester.

Junior and Senior Badminton are off to a good start. Students have been practicing two nights a week in preparation for the tournaments which will happen in April. Thank you to Coaches Myles and Mielhausen for all their hard work to date!

Secondary Student council was busy in February planning Valentine’s Day activities. They organized a gingerbread house making content where students competed in the House Colour groups to create the best design of Aphrodite’s Palace. Green House was the ultimate winner. Secondary Student council also planned a dress-up theme week the week before March break and handed out green coloured Rice Crispy squares in recognition of St Patrick’s Day.

23 students from grades 7-12 have been busy since September rehearsing two to three nights a week, plus lunch hours, for Footloose the musical. They learned choreography, lines, and blocking, as well as singing, and making sets, props – you name it!

As always, there are many amazing projects happening in our classes, too! We have over 25 students out on Co-op right now. In fact, we have several students working right here in our very own school! Carly is the Art Co-op student and has been busy painting the set for the play. Alexis, Maddy, and Acadia are Co-oping in the elementary wing, lending their leadership skills to the elementary teachers.

The Chemistry class has been hard at work learning about intermolecular forces. The Art and Ancient Civilizations classes have been very busy working with clay and glass mediums creating mosaics and replicas of ancient artifacts. The gym classes have been trained in the weight room, just finished their badminton unit, and are moving onto basketball.

We would like to thank Matt Wieler from Nipissing University who has been a student teacher in our grade 9 gym and science classes. He has been a welcome addition to our staff.

Secondary students are also planning a trip to Stratford at the end of April to see The Hobbit. They will get to participate in a workshop with Stratford staff ahead of the show.

Fundraising for the 2027 Europe Trip continues! Stay tuned for more information about an up and coming BBB-event (Baseball, BBQ, Bottle Drive) to help raise funds for students on the trip.
