The following letter was sent to Mayor Milt McIver and the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula Council
Dear Mayor McIver and Council,
This letter addresses concerns about three items in the 2026 Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula Budget:
1) New Water Pumper Truck for the Fire Department
2) Firehall Exhaust Ventilation System
3) Purchase of a third Roll Off Truck.
New 2500 Gallon Water Tanker Pumper Truck for the Fire Department for + or – $800,000.00.
• This unit can only be at one place at any given time.
• Due the size a tandem axle truck will be required. This will be considerably more awkward to manoeuvre on our varied roads and terrain.
Alternative:
• Purchase two 1500 gallon Water Tanker Pumper Trucks
• Total cost is about $800,000.00 + or –
• These will be heavy duty single axle trucks
• Easy to operate and short turning radius
• Base units are available with regular or shorter tilt cab
• Previous tilt cab fire truck was very popular to operate in close quarters
Two pumpers would have excellent availability.
• They can operate independently or backing each other up
• This also allows us to purchase one at a time thus spreading the capital costs over time.
Firehall Exhaust Ventilation System
• The $120,000.00 capital Cost is not warranted
• $11,000.00 total per Fire Hall is doable and realistic.
Additional Roll Off Truck to Handle Dump Transfer
• $550,000.00 Capital Expenditure
• plus, operator
• plus, insurance
• plus, maintenance
• plus, annul safety
Alternative:
• Contract this out to a local contractor to supply 36’ Aluminum Dump Trailer with tarp and hinged platform. Truck Tractor and Operator by contract.
• St Edmunds site has excellent potential with safe access.
• Consider total cost will likely be $75,000.00 / year.
We encourage a possible “re-think” of how to accomplish these concerns.
