Hellyer’s Foodland is sporting a new whimsical mural on one of its exterior walls. The colourful mural offers lots of symbolism. Look for the five swallows that celebrate the five generations of family that have owned the business establishment over the years. The fluttering pages represent the calendars that line the stairs to Grandad’s Attic. There is also a map of the peninsula. The mural highlights the two iconic landmarks of Lion’s Head, the lighthouse on one side of the mural and the Lion’s Head Bluff on the other.
Still a work in progress, stop by and maybe catch Irish born, Owen Sound-based artist Billy Goodkat at work. He has been working through sleet and snow squalls on this project for the last few weeks.
Owner Kara Hellyer points out that the mural is on the wall where the devastating fire of 2023 started. However, the idea of the mural predates the fire. Goodkat, who has completed many murals throughout Grey Bruce, was working on a mural in Southampton about four years ago when Kara stopped by to check out his work. The plan for a mural at Foodland came about after that encounter.
The eye-catching mural is located on the west wall of Hellyer’s Foodland, off Webster Street, at the alleyway between Scott’s Home Hardware and Foodland.
