In The Garden: Hints From A Mrs Gardener – Planning for This Year’s Garden

Sitting here listening to Willie Nelson’s “Blue eyes crying in the rain”, is making me thankful for the rain we received. A good start for the garden. Now for some nice warm sunshine to make every thing pop.

I loaded up on mulch and topsoil last Fall, so I am ready to hit the ground running. Who am I kidding? I haven’t been able to run in some time.

Now that the rain has stopped, I can get a coffee and take a garden stroll to take mental notes as to what I want to do (doesn’t mean they will get done). Last year I tidied up a couple of gardens out back, taking all the rocks out and pushing the garden back whereever I could. Looks so nice and tidy now. Taking the edges in a bit made a difference. Hoping to do the same this year, however I am starting to hear loud complaints from some of my house plants – well, most of them really.

Feeling a bit guilty so I cleaned them up with a damp cloth, wiped down their pots, added some fresh soil, and fertilised them all. I do not fertilise them in the winter – they need a break – but come Spring they get a good shot and a couple more till Fall.

The African Violets I got from Brenda’s in Wiarton are growing like crazy but no new blooms. I can never get them to bloom. My Mom had huge beautiful Violets. Hmmmm… Ya think maybe cuz that was her name – Violet ?

Soon the gardens will be up pretty and I will be enjoying my early morning stroll “In the Garden”.

Happy Spring, Happy Gardening,

Joni
