Sellout Beef Dinner
July 12th, 2022 our Branch hosted a wonderful Beef Dinner to sellout participants. Special thanks for the success of this event go to Event Coordinator Wayne Morningstar and the Ladies of our Branch Auxiliary. These amazing ladies yet again performed their miracles in the kitchen. Without them, functions like this would be impossible.
Wayne thanked all the additional Legion Members for their help to ensure the success of this event.
Ruck to Remember
During the early part of July, many Legion Branches along The Bruce Trail were involved in the ongoing “Ruck 2 Remember”. This trek will be the full length of the trail from Tobermory to Niagara on the Lake. Please see special report, from Branch President, Richard Smith below.
Lion’s Head Legion Hosts Ruck 2 Remember
Submitted by Richard Smith, President, Lion’s Head Legion Branch 202
It was a great honour and pleasure to host the Ruck 2 Remember team at the Lion’s Head Legion from Thursday, July 7 to Sunday, July 10. To begin, I would like to thank Sharron and Don Colter, Susan and Dave Uren, Wendy and Brian Reis, and Mary and Richard Smith for hosting the team and for serving and preparing their breakfasts and supper. It was greatly appreciated by all.
The Ruck 2 Remember is a registered not-for-profit that was established to support veterans, police, firefighters and paramedics. The team organizes two major events each year, the annual “Road 2 Recovery” which raises funds for “Operation: Leave the Streets Behind” and the “Canuck Ruck for the Homeless” which is an annual outreach event where the team collects clothing, gift cards, and care packages for the homeless and traverses the city handing them out to those that are most in need.
“Additionally, we support other events whose causes overlap with our own by providing man power and leveraging our experience in fundraising and organization. We consider ourselves a workhorse organization.” (Information taken from their website)

This year, the annual Road 2 Recovery is walking the entire Bruce Trail of 900 kilometres starting in Tobermory on July 5 and ending in Niagara-on-the-Lake on August 7. They are supporting “Leave the Streets Behind” which assists veterans who are homeless. As they walk the Bruce Trail, they will be having breakfast, supper and lodging at 20 different legions along the way. The Lion’s Head Legion is the second legion where they have stayed.
The members of the Ruck team are Lino Di Julio, Joey Dimauro and Dave Ward. Dave is the driver who provides support for the two hikers. Lino told me that he and Joey took some beautiful pictures of this portion of the trail, and met some interesting hikers along the way.
Dave, the driver’s job, is to take the other two men back to the trail after breakfast and pick them up at the end of the day. The driver is also the team’s backup. If one of the hikers needs something, he can contact Dave by cell phone. The driver also does other tasks for the men as required.
One of the questions that I asked Lino and Joey was what training they did to prepare for such a marathon walk. They informed me that they would go out every day and walk the Bruce Trail in the Hamilton area. They also went to the gym and did running on a treadmill carrying 20-pound weights.
One of the reasons for this type of preparation is that these hikers carry rucksacks weighing 50 pounds. The rucksack contains water, food, and other necessities.
As of July 8, the team has raised $75,000 for Homeless Veterans. Lino also told me that the team is sponsored by 20 companies.
If you wish to read further information about Ruck 2 Remember the team has a website. Goggle Ruck 2 Remember and you can see their website. The team also has a Facebook page where you can see parts of the Bruce Trail that the team has walked.
