McFARLANE, Glen – of Lion’s Head. Passed away peacefully on March 25th with Jeanne, his wife for over 60 years, by his side. He will be forever missed by Jeanne, son Tom (Heather); brothers Jim (June) and Murray (Lucy), sisters Joan (Bob deceased) and Carol; sisters-in-law Joyce (Allan deceased), Carol (Roger), Corinne and Charles (both deceased); many nieces and nephews; and many friends. Glen was predeceased by his parents, Eileen and Howard McFarlane; his daughter Tossa (Jody); and nephew Allen. Glen grew up on a farm near Stayner and graduated from U of T with a BASC in Electrical Engineering. He worked for Ontario Hydro for a few years, and then moved on to Ottawa, Arnprior, London and Oakville as a distribution engineer in each city. In 1984, he became General Manager of Sarnia Hydro. In London, Jeanne and Glen were blessed with two children – Tom in 1969, and Tossa in 1971. He was never happier than when spending time with his children, teaching them to ski, skate, fish, paddle etc. As a real hockey fan, Glen was delighted when Tom joined a team. He never missed a practice or a game. Jeanne always said that hockey was Tom’s greatest gift to his Dad. Tossa’s gift to her Dad was her zest for life, in addition to her enchanting smile and sparkling blue eyes. The family was devastated when she died in 2021. In 1975, Glen and Jeanne bought property up on the Beautiful Bruce, and had a cottage built on Sunset Drive near Howdenvale. Their family enjoyed boating, fishing, golfing, and cross-country skiing through the bush. After retirement in ‘95, Glen built his dream “log home”, just south of the cottage. In addition to his many household projects, he became a beekeeper, which proved to be a good retirement pastime. His white honey won top awards at the Royal Winter Fair for 5 years in a row. Glen later partnered with Don Forster, and they became good friends, continuing to care for the bees, and collect excellent honey. Close to the day he died, Glen was devoted to checking the bees – and the cottage – on a daily basis. As time moved on, Glen found the upkeep of his dream home increasingly difficult and sold it. At the end of 2015, Jeanne and Glen moved into the Hayes apartments in Lion’s Head and have enjoyed living there. Throughout their lives, Glen and Jeanne were active members of the United Church, most recently participating in the Pike Bay and Lion’s Head churches. Family invited friends to gather at the Thomas C. Whitcroft Peninsula Chapel, 272 Berford St., Wiarton (519) 534-5341 on Saturday April 9, 2022 for visitation from 1-2 PM, where a service to celebrate Glen’s life was held in the chapel at 2 o’clock.
