Bruce Peninsula OPP Report: Motorist Charged, Impaired Drivers Arrested

(NORTHERN BRUCE PENINSULA, ON) – On June 15, 2020, Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a trespassing complaint at Highway 6, Northern Bruce Peninsula, at the Bruce Peninsula National Park. The park is currently closed due to Emergency Orders related to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Officers attended and were told by Parks Canada Wardens that the suspect vehicle, a (red) sport utility vehicle (SUV), left prior to police arrival. Police located the SUV in-line to board the Chi-Cheemaun Ferry, in Tobermory. During the investigation OPP officers learned the driver was prohibited from driving. The driver was instructed they were under arrest, at which time they ran from police. Officers quickly located and arrested the driver, with assistance from a Parks Canada Warden, Owen Sound Transportation staff and civilians that observed this incident.

The accused, a 40 year old of no fixed address, has been charged with the following offences,

• Operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited, section 320.18(1)(a) Criminal Code of Canada (CC)

• Resist a Peace Officer, section 129(a) CC

• Failure to comply with release order, section 145(5)(a) CC

The accused was held for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice on June 16, 2020.

OPP ARREST IMPAIRED DRIVERS

(SOUTH BRUCE PENINSULA, ON) – On June 12, 2020 at 4:59 p.m. Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stopped a black pick-up truck on Southampton Parkway, in South Bruce Peninsula, as a result of a traffic complaint. Officers arrested and charged A 64 year old of Waterloo, ON with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, section 320.14(1)(a) Criminal Code of Canada (CC), operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration over 80 milligrams (mg), section 320.14(1)(b) CC and Assault, section 266 CC.

The accused was released on an Undertaking and is required to appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on June 25, 2020.

On June 14, 2020 at 1:37 p.m. Grey Bruce OPP stopped a silver car on Bruce Street, in South Bruce Peninsula, as a result of a traffic complaint. Officers arrested and charged a 23 year old of South Bruce Peninsula with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, section 320.14(1)(a) CC and operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration over 80 mg, section 320.14(1)(b) CC.

The accused was released on an Undertaking and is required to appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on August 13, 2020.

Investigations revealed drivers impaired by drug

(CHATSWORTH, ON) – Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers continue to see drivers making illegal and potential deadly choices that will affect others on the road. Three drivers were stopped and charged with drug impairment over three days, last weekend.

On June 6, 2020 at 5:22 p.m. Grey Bruce OPP were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program on Concession 21, Georgian Bluffs. Officers arrested and charged a 29 year old from Neyaashiinigmiing First Nation with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol and drugs, section 320.14(1)(a) Criminal Code of Canada (CC).

On June 7, 2020 at 10:46 a.m. Grey Bruce OPP stopped a (gold) sport utility vehicle on Sauble Falls Parkway, South Bruce Peninsula as a result of poor driving behaviour. The driver was arrested the driver and drugs were seized from the vehicle. 31 year old from South Bruce Peninsula has been charged with the following,

-Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol and drugs, section 320.14(1)(a) CC

-Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Methamphetamine, section 4(1) Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)

-Possession of a Schedule I Substance- Other Drugs, section 4(1) CDSA

-Two counts driving while under suspension, section 53(1) Highway Traffic Act

On June 8, 2020 at 10:16 p.m. Grey Bruce OPP stopped a (white) car on Concession 17, Georgian Bluffs with two occupants. Officers arrested the driver for impaired driving. The licence plates attached to the vehicle were discovered to be stolen. A 26 year old from Waterloo has been charged with the following,

-Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol and drugs, section 320.14(1)(a) CC

-Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, section 355(b) CC

-Drive motor vehicle – no licence, section 32(1) Highway Traffic Act (HTA)

-Use plate not authorized for vehicle, section 12(1)(d) HTA

-Fail to apply for permit on becoming owner, section 11(2) HTA

-Operate a motor vehicle without insurance, section 2(1)(a) Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act

DRIVERS CHARGED FOR STUNT DRIVING

(SOUTH BRUCE PENINSULA, ON) – On June 13, 2020 Grey Bruce OPP charged two motorists on Highway 6, in South Bruce Peninsula, with stunt driving – 50km/h or more over the posted speed limit, contrary to section 172(1) Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

At 1:33 p.m., A 21 year old of London ON, was travelling over 140 kilometres per hour (km/h) in a car, in a posted 80 km/h zone.

At 9:17 p.m., A 30 year old of Vaughan ON, was travelling over 135 km/h in a sport utility vehicle in a posted 80 km/h zone and each driver received a summons to attend court to answer to the charge. 

Both of these drivers were issued a 7 day drivers licence suspensions and their vehicles were towed and impounded for 7 days.

The Grey Bruce OPP want to remind motorists that excessive speed in one of the leading causes of deaths on our highways. Slow down and be safe.

8 STUNT DRIVERS CHARGED OVER 7 DAYS

(CHATSWORTH, ON) -Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have stopped 8 stunt drivers, over the past 7 days, for travelling at a speed 50 kilometres per hour or more over the posted speed limit. The traffic stops occurred across the patrol area of Grey Bruce OPP detachment.

Grey Bruce OPP charged the following 8 drivers with stunt driving, 50km/h or more over the posted speed limit, section 172(1) Highway Traffic Act (HTA). 

• 18 year old from Meaford, stopped on Grey Road 40, Chatsworth

• 23 year old from Nepean, stopped on Bruce Street, South Bruce Peninsula

• 26 year old from South Bruce, stopped on Grey Bruce Line, Chatsworth

• 22 year old from Brampton, stopped on Highway 6, Northern Bruce Peninsula

• 27 year old from Arran-Elderslie, stopped on Highway 10, Southgate

• 25 year old from Scarborough, stopped on Highway 6, Northern Bruce Peninsula

• 48 year old from Brampton, stopped on Highway 6, South Bruce Peninsula

• 35 year old from Hamilton, stopped on Highway 6, Northern Bruce Peninsula

 From January 1, 2020 to June 12, 2020 Grey Bruce OPP have charged 43 drivers with stunt driving on area highways.

Grey Bruce OPP are asking the public to report unsafe driving, including excessive speeding and aggressive driving.

GREY BRUCE OPP EXECUTE SEARCH WARRANT: Recovered stolen firearm and stolen construction site property

(GEORGIAN BLUFFS, ON) – Over the past few months multiple thefts, from construction sites throughout Grey and Bruce Counties, have been reported to Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

On Friday, June 5, 2020 Grey Bruce OPP officers assisted members of OPP Grey Bruce Community Street Crime Units (CSCU), with executing a search warrant at a residence at Sideroad 15, Georgian Bluffs in Grey County.

As a result of the execution of the search warrant, OPP officers recovered a stolen firearm, assorted stolen lumber, construction tools, 74 industrial solar panels, and seized illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia. Three people located in the residence were arrested. The estimated value of the recovered property is $43,000.

•A 49 year old from Georgian Bluffs has been charged with the following offences, 

-4 counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, section 354(1)(a) Criminal Code of Canada (CC)

-Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, section 354(1)(a) CC

-Possession of ammunition contrary to probation order, section 117.01(1) CC

The accused was released on an Undertaking as is required to appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on August 13, 2020.

• A 37 year old from Georgian Bluffs has been charged with the following offences, 

-Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, section 95(a) Criminal Code of Canada (CC)

-Possession of a prohibited device-high capacity magazine, section 92(2) CC

-Unauthorized possession of a firearm, section 92(1) CC

-Possession of a firearm obtained by crime, section 96(a) CC

-Possession of methamphetamine for purpose of trafficking, section 5(2) Controlled drugs and substances act (CDSA)

-Possession of methamphetamine, section 4(1) CDSA

-Possession of Cocaine, section 4(1) CDSA

-4 counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, section 354(1)(a) CC

-Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, section 354(1)(a) CC

The accused was held for a bail hearing on June 6, 2020.

• A 38 year old from Georgian Bluffs has been charged with the following offences, 

-Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, section 95(a) Criminal Code of Canada (CC)

-Possession of a prohibited device-high capacity magazine, section 92(2) CC

-Unauthorized possession of a firearm, section 92(1) CC

-Possession of a firearm obtained by crime, section 96(a) CC

STOLEN VEHICLE, TAKEN FROM RESIDENCE: OPP recover vehicle, person arrested

(NORTHERN BRUCE PENINSULA, ON) – On June 3, 2020 at 9:04 a.m. Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched to the theft of 2017 (grey) Ford Escape with attached Ontario licence plate #AAAZ692 from a residence at North Shore Road, Northern Bruce Peninsula.

Sometime between June 2, 2020 at 8:00 p.m. and June 3, 2020 at 7:50 a.m. unknown person(s) stole the Ford Escape from the driveway.

On June 4, 2020 at 1:57 p.m. Grey Bruce OPP officers were dispatched to a suspicious person at a business in Hepworth, South Bruce Peninsula. Officers arrived and located a person in possession of the outstanding stolen Ford Escape.

Grey Bruce OPP officers were assisted by Grey Bruce OPP Community Street Crime Unit, following stolen property being located in the recovered vehicle.

OPP have charged a 41 year old from Woodstock, with the following offences; 

-Possession of property obtained by crime, exceeding $5,000 ,section 354(1)(a) Criminal Code of Canada (CC)

-Two counts of possession of property obtained by crime, under $5,000, section 354(1)(a) CC

The accused was held for a bail hearing on June 5, 2020.

GREY BRUCE OPP WELCOMES NEW OFFICERS!

(CHATSWORTH, ON) – In May of 2020, the Grey Bruce Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) welcomed a new recruit to the county. 

Provincial Constable Pippi JUNG is originally from Neustadt, Ontario.

Pippi completed a Police Studies Degree in 2018. Pippi volunteered as an auxiliary member for four years with the South Bruce OPP. Pippi also worked as a records clerk with the Owen Sound Police Service, before transitioning to a Police Officer.

PC Jung loves farming and nature and she is thrilled to be assigned to the Grey Bruce OPP and looks forward to continuing to serve her community.

In May of 2020, the Grey Bruce Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) welcomed a new recruit to the county. 

Provincial Constable Ryan WINTERS was born and raised in South Bruce Peninsula. Ryan graduated from the Police Foundations program at Georgian College in 2016.

Ryan was an OPP Marine Student in 2014 and then he volunteered with the OPP Auxiliary program for two years. He served three years with the Canadian Armed Forces, before transitioning to a Police Officer.

Ryan is an avid outdoor enthusiast and is thrilled to be working in his home community with the Grey Bruce OPP.
