Grey Bruce OPP Responded To 378 Calls For Service Civic Holiday Weekend; 21 Stunt Drivers Charged

AUGUST LONG WEEKEND, TRAFFIC AND CALLS FOR SERVICE KEEP OFFICERS BUSY

Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to 378 calls for service from Friday, August 2 to Monday, August 5. Officers issued 102 Provincial Offence Notices (PON) for various Provincial Act violations. 25 motor vehicle collisions, minor in nature, were reported to OPP. 18 Domestic and Family disputes were investigated by Grey Bruce OPP officers, no charges have been laid at this time for these occurrences. 

Traffic on all area highways was heavy over the entire weekend. 68 traffic complaints were called in across the detachment area. Over 30 of the traffic complaints calls came in for the stretch of Highway 6 from Wiarton to Tobermory.

21 drivers on Highway 6 on Bruce Peninsula, Wiarton to Tobermory, were charged with stunt driving-50 kilometres an hour or more over the posted speed limit. They were issued Provincial Summons for Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound to answer to the charge, their vehicles were impounded for 7 days and their driver’s licences were suspended for 7 days

OPP officers patrolling Sauble Beach over the weekend, on police wide tire bicycles, issued 14 PONs under the Liquor Licence Act. Grey Bruce OPP continue to ask the public to assist with liquor and by-law compliance on Sauble Beach, by calling in complaints to OPP or Town of South Bruce By-law.

MALE CHARGED WITH IMPAIRED AFTER MULTIPLE COLLISIONS – Driver struck parked vehicles

(NORTHERN BRUCE PENINSULA, ON) – On August 4, 2019 at 9:30 p.m. Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched to multiple motor vehicle collisions involving parked vehicles hit by a (grey) Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) travelling on Legion Street and Hay Bay Road in Northern Bruce Peninsula. OPP officers attended and arrested the driver of the SUV.

A 53 year old male from Kitchener has been charged with the following offences:

 -Operation of motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, section 320.14(1)(a) Criminal Code of Canada (CC)

-Operation of motor vehicle while impaired – blood alcohol concentration over 80, section 320.14(1)(b) CC

The accused has been released on a Promise to Appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on August 22, 2019.

MALE DRIVER CHARGED WITH IMPAIRED DRIVING AND OTHER OFFENCES

(SOUTH BRUCE PENINSULA, ON) – On July 31, 2019 at 8:43 p.m. Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a RIDE vehicle stops on Bryant Street in South Bruce Peninsula. Officers observed a (silver) Sport Utility Vehicle commit a traffic offence while approaching the RIDE program, driver failed to yield to another motor vehicle when entering the roadway from an intersecting street. A breath demand was made to the driver, who failed the approved roadside screening device.

Grey Bruce OPP officers arrested the male for the offence of operate a motor vehicle with more than 80 milligrams (mg) of alcohol in 100 millilitres (ml) of blood. A search of the vehicle revealed a concealed collapsible baton and 135 grams of cannabis. Both were seized by police.

The driver was transported to Grey Bruce OPP detachment in Wiarton. A breath test was administered where he provided two suitable breath samples over the legal limit of 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood.

A 38 year old male from South Bruce Peninsula has been charged with the following offences:

-Operation of motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, section 320.14(1)(a) Criminal Code of Canada (CC)

-Operation of motor vehicle while impaired – blood alcohol concentration over 80, section 320.14(1)(b) CC

-Carrying concealed weapon, section 90 CC

-Possession of over 30g dried cannabis (or equivalent) in a public place, section 8(1)(a) Cannabis Act

-Fail to yield to traffic, section 144(8) Highway Traffic Act

The accused was released on a Promise to Appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on August 22, 2019.

OPP AND BYLAW PATROLLING SAUBLE BEACH – People making poor choices when using beach

(SOUTH BRUCE PENINSULA, ON) – Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), along with South Bruce Peninsula Bylaw officers, will be patrolling Sauble Beach this long weekend looking for people who choose to participate in illegal and prohibited activities.

Grey Bruce OPP have been receiving complaints from the public that people are using the beach with disregard for the laws and bylaws that are in place to protect the public. The top complaints received by both OPP and Bylaw has been, drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco or cannabis or using a BBQ, on the beach area.

During the last July long weekend OPP officers charged multiple people with having open liquor on the beach. Officers and bylaw officers will be patrolling on foot, bicycle and ATV this weekend.
