LETCHER, Gary – With great sadness we announce the passing of Gary Robert Letcher on Sunday, November 24, 2019 at the Chesley Hospital, at the age of 78. Gary was an elementary teacher, vice-principal and principal with the York Region and Simcoe County Boards of Education. Gary was devoted to his students and to shaping policies and best practices in elementary education. He also served as the president, treasurer, and grievance officer for the Ontario Public School Teacher’s Federation (OPSTF). Gary loved Tobermory and was connected to the Hay Bay area for over 50 years, first through his parents, Bob and Ivy, and then as a cottager himself (1984). Gary retired to his cottage full time in 1996 and remained an active resident until 2014, when he relocated to the community of Tara, for health reasons. Gary will be fondly missed by family, neighbours, friends, former colleagues and students. Beloved husband and best friend of Lois (MacLennan). Loving father of Shawn Letcher (Patti), Tara (Peter) Koeyers, and step-father of Victoria Clowater. Fondly remembered by nieces, nephews, cousins, and life-time friends: Reg (Karen) Thacker, Ron (Joanne) Andriet, Linda (Bud) Godhue, Bob (Marilyne) Wilson, Sally (Howard) Williams and many others. He was predeceased by his parents, Henry Robert (Bob) and Ivy (Sargeant) Letcher. Visitation took place at the Rhody Family Funeral Home, Chesley, on Saturday, December 7, 2019, with a Legion service prior. The memorial service celebrating Gary’s life was held on Sunday, December 8, 2019. Interment will take place in Dunks Bay Cemetery, Tobermory, in 2020.
