Media Release

(Northern Bruce Peninsula – January 10th, 2023) – Today at 9am, Bayshore Broadcasting officially turned on the switch to start testing the FM radio signals of the new (CFPS-FM-1), 91.9FM the Bruce and (CIBP-FM), 104.3 FM, the Tobermory Information Station.

“Spotty radio reception on the Peninsula for local radio and a demand for local radio service are why Bayshore Broadcasting put the new transmitter at Tobermory”, according to Kevin Brown, Managing Director of Bayshore Broadcasting.

“The 91.9 signal will expand the reach of Bruce County’s radio station into Northern Bruce Peninsula and beyond. Playing the best classic and new rock for all the people of Bruce – from Kincardine, to Wiarton, and now Tobermory and the northern Bruce Peninsula, “the Bruce” will build on its reputation as your #1 source for local news, sports, and weather, too. The Bruce talent line-up includes “Longy and Brougher” in the Morning, “Rockin’ Robin” in Middays and “Scotty” for the Drive Home!

Turn us on, and turn it up!”

The CRTC issued its decision in mid-2019, which allowed the Owen Sound-based radio broadcaster to erect a transmitter to repeat the signal from its FM radio station, 97.9 the Bruce in Port Elgin, which is farther south along the Lake Huron shoreline.

“That’s an underserved area of Grey-Bruce,” Kevin Brown said in an interview. “And we’ve heard from different listeners over the years that they wish they could get one of our stations up here and get local news, local weather . . . .” He also noted Bruce County “has been growing like wildfire in tourism.”

The amendment granted by the CRTC to Bayshore’s Port Elgin station licence notes the new radio service would incorporate “information of direct and particular relevance to residents of Tobermory and the Northern Bruce Peninsula.”

Brown added: “And then some day we hope that it’s grown enough in that market area that we can evolve from a rebroad(cast) to a full, originating local station.”

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission decision allowed the new FM transmitter to operate at 91. 9 MHz, about a 2000-watt service.

It’s the first radio service directly serving Tobermory.

With the Tobermory broadcast, Bayshore Broadcasting will have 10 radio services under its banner.
