ASHCROFT, Beverlie Darlene

47

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Darlene Ashcroft. She passed peacefully with family by her side on Thursday, June 11th at the age of 72. Remembered by her sons, Troy and his partner Michelle, and Derek and his wife Jamie; grandchildren, Aiden (April), Calder, Tucker, Ellie, and Ruby; siblings, Morris Ashcroft, Debbie Hellyer, Dona Ashcroft, Marydale Ashcroft, and Brenda Ashcroft; long-time friend Judy Adams, and her special companions, Juniper and Oreo. Predeceased by her parents Doug and Juanita; and her former husband, Rodney Adams. Though life took Darlene and Rodney down different paths, the love and history they shared through family remained meaningful, and they continued to care deeply for one another through the years. Darlene was born in Michigan in 1953 and moved to the farm on the Bruce Peninsula shortly after. She was the first of six children. The farm was full of adventures and the perfect place to learn a strong work ethic and the value of community. Darlene married Rodney just after high school and moved to Tobermory where their children were born. In 1980 they moved to Edmonton Alberta and lived there for several years before returning to Ontario. Darlene never liked winter. In fact, she detested it. Being cold and having to deal with snow made her long for a climate of sunshine and heat. She did spend a few years in British Columbia which was better, but still not quite what she was looking for. In 2001, just after 9/11, Darlene packed up her car and moved to Key West, Florida. She had found a place where she truly felt at home. Sunshine, heat, and a quirky vibe. She could play in her garden all year round. She worked in high-end resorts and restaurants, was a regular on a local radio station, a member of the Rotary Club, and well-known around town. She loved it there and stayed for several years, but when the political climate started to change, she felt it was time to come back to Canada. Darlene’s last few years were spent in Owen Sound. Darlene was never interested in the pursuit of material wealth. She wanted to keep a small footprint and live a simple and sustainable life. Her love of plants, flowers and cats made her happy. She was creative and artistic. She had compassion for the downtrodden and served many meals to the homeless. Darlene challenged the status quo, and was firm in her convictions. She was very intelligent and well-prepared when it came to backing up her beliefs. She was feisty and courageous. She was truly one-of-a-kind and will be deeply missed. Darlene passed knowing that she was surrounded with the love of her family and friends. Special thanks to Dr. Cox, Care Partners and Michelle and Sarah who provided loving and compassionate care to Darlene in her final days. A Memorial Scattering in the Garden at Christ Church, Lion’s Head, will take place on Sunday, June 28th at 2:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at the Lion’s Head Arena from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
