So, I didn’t have to sneak off to Wiarton to treat myself to another house plant; the new Peacocks store had a nice selection of house plants. Of course one followed me home, a nice big beautiful Peace Lily. Love these guys. They are such tough, pretty, easy plants to grow. Just keep them well watered and away from direct sunlight and they’re happy. I have had one for maybe six years or more and just put her in a larger pot last Fall.

That is one mistake we all have made – bringing home a new plant and immediately putting her in a pot too large. Leave her in the container she came in where she feels at home. A larger container is way too much stress on a new plant – they have already gone from a greenhouse to a truck and then into a store and now your home. Just find a good spot for her and let her get used to her new home.

In this cold weather make sure to cover the plant, a plastic bag will be fine, tucked in around the plant to keep the wind out. Remember they are tropicals. Once home just let her sit for awhile before removing the bag.

Most house plants like a fair amount of light just not full sun and they do not like being moved around too much. If you have a pretty pot that she will fit in, go for it. A pot in a pot is ok, just make sure when watering that the water does not stay in the pot. That will cause wet rot and a sure death for any plant.

Do not try to separate them to get more bang for your buck, they will not be happy. Unless the plant is a Pothos – those guys are tough as nails.

I have a spot where I have quite a few plants all grouped together and the new Peace Lily went on the top spot. She is so regal looking sitting with all her new friends. They all have the same light, water and heat requirements and the corner looks great and is keeping me happy till I can get out in my Garden.

Till then, I’m happy.
