Editor,
Aboriginal politics aside, I’m not at all sure I’m comfortable with much of Mr. Elliot’s rant against Bruce Power/nuclear generation in general and the Deep Geological Repository in particular published in the last issue.
First, let’s put things in a bit of perspective by noting that Bruce Power is the engine of economic growth for Bruce, Grey and Huron Counties and has been for decades. The idea of “buying out Municipal Councils” doesn’t stand up to scrutiny – the nuclear plants were built over a 30-year period under both duly elected political parties – nobody was “sold out”.
Money wise, about 50 – 60 % of the provinces power is produced by nuclear for which we are charged a fraction of the cost of solar, wind or gas. It’s the one thing that saved us from the wind/solar debacle a few years back albeit a couple billion dollars still had to be pushed forward to our grandchildren to pay for said windmill contracts.
The repository is for low grade waste like coveralls and rags (not fuel) to be buried way below the water table. Having worked in deep hard rock mines up north I can tell you that when stable deep geologic formations are dry, they are dry like the Sahara. This idea of polluting Lake Huron is fear mongering- pure and simple. Plus a big dose of good old NIMBY – Not In My Back Yard. Shameful. Everyone has to do their part for society, and you don’t push it all off on your brother.
(One option for Mr. Elliot would be for him to do the honourable thing and cut those dratted hydro wires going into his house in the morning…)

PS: A New Dawn?
I read with some concern the well reasoned article by the board of the Golden Dawn Senior Citizen’s Home. As a start, I can’t help but wonder what our Township Council is going to do to help out?
One suggestion would be to do what our American brothers do when a valued industry or institution in their community is being threatened with closure (there, I said it.). They grant 25 years without land tax. It’s only a start I’ll admit but it can be done with a simple vote of Council at the next Council meeting.
I’ve long noted that “our” community retirement home receives no County support. The Township antes up for trivia like tourist washrooms and boat launch facilities and does have significant cash reserves. I would think a significant six figure donation would be a good example to set when the fund-raising starts.
And finally, perhaps our Mayor could use his vast experience at County to convince them to provide support as is done in Wiarton and Walkerton – (I mean who wants to be forced to move from Tobermory or Lion’s Head and have to live in either of those sad places? ha-ha.)
